Newsreel footage from the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Collpase. She was already known to move up in down in the wind, but in 1940, she began to oscillate due to resonance and would eventually collapse

Marching on a ... ( 4 months ago by Modus74)
Marching on a bridge in complete sync does not creat resonance but it can amplify the vibe if the bridge has already started to resonate. There are drawings and tales about a bridge that collapsed when soldiers were marching over in the 19th century. But there is absolutely no undeniable evidence of resonance at that very moment.

I am an engineer, so let me explain. You are correct in that this failure is due to wind induced vibration, but what you see is neither resonance nor vortex shedding. Resonance occurs when the forcing function coincides with the natural frequency of the structure. Wind is random, not a harmonic force. Not only that, but the failure mode did not occur at natural frequency. What happened here is called aerodynamic instability. Good luck in your studies.

Modus74, In case you're referring to, resonance is the cause of failure. However, marching in sync alone can create resonance, not 'amplify vibes'. At a system's natural frequency, a harmonic input (marching) of any magnitude causes the system response to spike. The less damping, the greater the response.

any color footage was originally black and white, and was colorized later. the other documentary might have been taken from the other end of the bridge (maybe)

Wikipedia says that the original film was in color, but newsreels like this one were done on black and white film stock. Makes sense to me. The color version looks typical for the era.

Then the collapse was still fatal. If any life was taken in this disaster, it was fatal. It doesn't matter if the one fatality was a dog, cat, hamster or pet goldfish, it's still a fatality.
