i write this in the van on the way home from the Album Chart Show. had a GREAT night... a new experience for us entirely so it was fascinating to see what goes on. Sorry, didn't get much footage but what i did is below (you know i try to give you guys an insight into what goes on at these things...)
Koko's a great venue for a start. The crowd filtered in, and it was apparent that most of them had NO IDEA who any of the bands were... so the guy (Joe, is it?) was bigging up the crowd who seemed thoroughly bored until commanded to 'get excited' - was hilarious and quite wrong. So they did links
for Lily Allen (even though Lily was not there (thankfully!)) and he'd get them to go CRAZY... it was so bizarre. then these poor chickens had to wait for ages between bands for 3 songs! It must've been the lure; the possibility of being on television. well, who am i to judge - it's why we were ther
e!
So Amy Winehouse (also on Island) was rubbish. She isn't into R &B you can tell. She's a punk who's been offered money to do this because she genuinely has an amazing voice. No songs. Great shoes though ;) Looks like a Bratz doll - way too thin now but with a huge head. Her backstage entourage was huge too... ugly.
The Bluetones? Better than the washed up guys i expected. just.
Juliet & The Licks were ace however. Tapping the energy off stage could have removed our reliance on fossil fuels. The sad thing is that it's so difficult to separate and judge them for what they are. I could not shake in my mind the feeling that the band - amazing as they were - were her session band. and that's not fair, because they're great... but it's so hard to get over that prejudice that she is a film star. Juliet was great though - really down to earth. I told her that someone working in a supermarket then joining a band isn't constantly reminded of their previous job with people saying 'oh, your real calling was in stacking peas'. She laughed. I think she liked that i was the singer. Or maybe that's just how i saw it. She liked my new jacket... i didn't let her have it though (even though it was only a fiver on ebay), i love it too much! settled with giving her a kiss on the cheek and a CD... hope she likes it. I'm appearing in their backstage DVD apparently, so look out for that one...
