Stephen Hawking: Asking big questions about the universe
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjBIsp8mS-c
http://www.ted.com In keeping with the theme of TED2008, professor Stephen Hawking asks some Big Questions about our universe -- How did the universe begin? How did life begin? Are we alone? -- and discusses how we might go about answering them.
PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO: http://www.youtube.com/user/TEDtalksDirector "Since, in the long run, every planetary civilization will be endangered by impacts from space, every surviving civilization is obliged to become spacefaring--not because of exploratory or romantic zeal, but for the most practical
reason imaginable: staying alive... If our long-term survival is at stake, we have a basic responsibility to our species to venture to other worlds." Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot, 1994 "We need the stars... We need purpose! We need the image the Destiny [to take root among the stars] gives us of ours
elves as a purposeful, growing species. We need to become the adult species that the Destiny can help us become! If we're to be anything other than smooth dinosaurs who evolve, specialize and die, we need the stars.... When we have no difficult, long-term purpose to strive toward, we fight each othe
r. We destroy ourselves. We have these chaotic, apocalyptic periods of murderous craziness." Octavia Butler, Parable of the Talents, 1998 "I don't think the human race will survive the next thousand years, unless we spread into space. There are too many accidents that can befall life on a single p
lanet. But I'm an optimist. We will reach out to the stars." Stephen Hawking, interview with Daily Telegraph, 2001 "The dinosaurs became extinct because they didn't have a space program. And if we become extinct because we don't have a space program, it'll serve us right!" Larry Niven, quoted by A
rthur Clarke in interview at space.com, 2001 "In time, [a Martian] colony would grow to the point of being self- sustaining. When this stage was reached, humanity would have a precious insurance policy against catastrophe at home. During the next millennium there is a significant chance that civil
ization on Earth will be destroyed by an asteroid, a killer plague or a global war. A Martian colony could keep the flame of civilization and culture alive until Earth could be reverse- colonized from Mars." Paul Davies, The New York Times, 2004 "We must turn our guns away from each other and outw
ards, to defend the Earth, creating a global and in space network of sensors and telescopes to find asteroids that could destroy our planet and create the systems to stop them. It makes no sense to dream great dreams while waiting to be hit by a train." Buzz Aldrin and Rick Tumlinson, Ad Astra Onli
ne, 2006

Potassium-argon or ... ( 2 months ago by revtyson)
Potassium-argon or K-Ar dating is a geochronological method used in many geoscience disciplines. It is based on measuring the products of the radioactive decay of potassium (K). Potassium (K) is one of the most abundant elements in the Earth's crust.

theres still no science to say that rate has been the same for all that time. after all, evolution says everything has been changing immeasurably slowly. That sort of dating process is based on the assumption no extra argon, potassium or it's daughter element were added or subtracted during those 4.6 billion years...

Yeah, probably no one on Youtube is ever serious about this kind of crap. Though im glad that you put this up since i also agree we should take patrol to space and locate any asteriod's that have a possibility of countering earth so that we can destroy them. Though i heard that Pheonix's space program is countering problems on Mar's from the soil digging.

I remember these legendary words of Hawking. Quite unusual as scientists have to be careful not to cause panic. So it felt really as an alarm call. It seems we are not really learning.
You know he ... ( 4 weeks ago by aggiematt86)
You know he believes in the existence of God right? But he does say that he tries to pursue further scientific knowledge without any religious bias. So I'd say he's a skeptic (someone who believes that religious traditions and beliefs regarding God are flawed).
"... if there were ... ( 4 weeks ago by aggiematt86)
"... if there were a complete set of laws, that would infringe God's freedom to change his mind and intervene in the world. It's a bit like the old paradox: Can God make a stone so heavy that he can't lift it? But the idea that God might want to change his mind is an example of the fallacy, pointed out by St. Augustine, of imagining God as a being existing in time: time is a property only of the universe that God created. Presumably, he knew what he intended when he set it up!" -S. Hawking
