Here's one of the many ways a webcam can be converted to a camera for a telescope. This is kind of an old mod but it shows pretty well the kind of things you would need to do. There is no limit on the design on these cameras, everybody pretty much goes their own way. You can check the web (places like QCUIAG ) for all kinds of links for designs and free software.

Since there is nothing up there to compare to (green grass, faces, white cars or houses), it's hard to set the color balance correctly when you take the pictures. The 'real' color of a nebula is not what the eye sees, because they are so dim. The camera gives the actual color, but only if it's adjusted correctly. Those images on the video have reasonably correct color, but not perfect. You can alter the coloring after you take the picture, and this is done a lot to fix problems.

Magnificent project and great video showing how it all goes together, thanks. To anyone who says 'heck I'll just buy one' - go ahead, we all have different skills and you are still going to have a blast discovering how to get great astroimages - but now you know some of the technology and engineering inside that black box that might cost you a thousand dollars. People make their own furniture too. Finding and doing what you are good at rocks and these cameras are sheer engineering brilliance.

Project to heavy for my skills - But thats OK - I was most impressed with the neatness of his layout - All wires tucked, boards laid out in symmetrical patterns - The project looking finished at all stages - Far to many times I have been presented with a rats nest of components and expected to understand what is going on - A pictures worth a thousand words...This guy is an artist...
