The first Apple came out September 1977 for $666.66. You're probably thinking of the Macintosh, which wasn't $4500, it was $1,995.
Also, how was Microsoft "far superior at the time"? Apple brought the PCs into the home, Microsoft was/is software based and didn't even haven an IPO until 2 years later (MS's March 1986 compared to Apple's December 1980).
Software wise, Microsoft only came out with Office (for Mac OS) in 1989, and Windows became more than _just_ an MS-DOS add-on with 3.0 (1990).
