Agree with the last bit... but not the first! :-)
Am led to believe the credits for this song run (Lake/ Prokofiev), my understanding being that the "orchestral" bit is from Prokofiev's "Lieutenant Kije".
Prokofiev was- to my understanding at least- a RUSSIAN composer!
But anyways- you raised a good point: a melody WAS a bit stolen here! ;-)

I agree with Cherry Mielita. I was 6 in 1975. My 7th birthday would be on december 3rd, so watching this clip brings back memories of childhood. I am now 38 so this from 30 + years ago. Happy childhood memories.

Actually it's an anti-Christmas song.Bute Lake could be clearer. All this christmas kitsch ("White christmas, Santa Claus, christmas presents etc etc.) is rubbish. The christians of the early centuries didn't celebrate this nonsense. Lake isn't aware of the fact that he is more bibical than this stupid evangelicals or the average american consumer.
The only other christmas pop song I can appreciate is "Father Christmas" by the Kinks"

Actually, that's incorrect. Lake has said the lyrics were inspired by violence in the Middle East in the mid-'70s and how, because of human conflict like that, Christmas wasn't always happy for everyone. The song is a wish for humanity to realize the meaning of Christmas and live up to it. That' s why the last lines of the song are "Hallelujah, Noel, be it heaven or hell, the Christmas we get, we deserve."
It's not "anti-Christmas."

While I dislike the over-commercialization of Christmas, I disagree with your statement above. What's wrong with kids believing in the wonderful story of Santa Claus and getting Christmas presents? It's not rubbish -- it's a harmless custom that brings a lot of happiness, makes a lot of memories , and engenders goodwill.
I suppose you disapprove of the Easter Bunny too? Lighten up.

So what? Why does celebrating Christmas have to be limited to what people 2,000 years ago did? The story of St. Nicholas was never intended to be, nor was it ever represented as being, a substitution for or a supplanting of the Christian observance of the birth of Jesus. Why can't people (espec ially kids) celebrate both?
Don't blame the holiday -- blame shallow, materialistic people who subvert its meaning.
