BlackTree TV sits down with Cedric The Entertainer and rapper/actor Common to discuss Dirty Cops, Obama, Media and their new movie "Street Kings"
The Game, Common & DJ Muggs Add Hip-Hop Flavor To New Keanu Reeves Flick
written by Jane
é Bolden Wednesday - March 5, 2008 The Game Upcoming police drama Street Kings has hip-hop written all over it, not only do Common and the Game have starring roles but former Cypress Hill producer DJ Muggs is also providing the score for the film. Set on the gritty streets of Los Angeles, Street
Kings features Keanu Reeves as an LAPD Vice Detective, determined to track down his former partner's killers. Forrest Whitaker, Common and the Game also star in the David Ayer-directed film. Ayer is known for writing such past films as Training Day and The Fast And The Furious. Due out in April, th
e flick also features a score created by renowned Cypress Hill and Soul Assassins producer, DJ Muggs. In a recently released statement, Muggs described his duties on the project: "We began the process of Street Kings by talking to David Ayer about the direction of the sound and how we wanted to con
vey certain moods in certain scenes," DJ Muggs explained. "Once the movie was shot, we went to work and brought the sound and movement to life." "The main difference from scoring and making records is that in scoring the music can't loop," Muggs explained. "You gotta build, take away and add change
s constantly as each frame changes. And the other difference is that when I make music, I only have to answer to me. This time I had the director and the producers and the studio Fox Searchlight. You have to make sure they get their vision across as well as the energy and emotion they want in the so
und of their film. I'm here for that purpose." DJ Muggs is currently working on his compilation album Soul Assassins III, as well as the concept album DJ Muggs vs. Planet Asia with Planet Asia.. Street Kings lands in theaters on April 11th. Starring: Keanu Reeves (The Matrix), Forest Whitaker (T
he Last King of Scotland), Hugh Laurie ("House") & Chris Evans (Fantastic Four)
lead the all-star cast including
Jay Mohr (Jerry Maguire), John Corbett (My Big Fat Greek Wedding),
Cedric the Entertainer (Johnson Family Vacation), Amaury Nolasco ("Prison Break"),
Naomi Harris (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End), Terry Crews ("Everybody Hates Chris"),
Common (American Gangster), & The Game.
Directed by the Writer of TRAINING DAY: DAVID AYER
Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves) is a veteran LAPD cop who finds life difficult to navigate after the death of his wife. When evidence implicates him in the execution of his former partner, Detective Terrance Washington (Terry Crews), Ludlow sets out on a quest to find the real murderers responsible and bring them to justice. With the help of a young Robbery Homicide Detective (Chris Evans), the two team up to tackle the diverse communities of Los Angeles. Academy
® Award winner Forest Whitaker plays Captain Wander, Ludlow's supervisor, whose duties include keeping him within the confines of the law and out of the clutches of Internal Affairs Captain Biggs (Hugh Laurie). A BlackTree Media Production Produced by Jamaal Finkley Hosted by Ms. Patricia Cage

Great, another one of these movies. Wasn't Training Day and American Gangster enough? Damn we love violence and love to see Niggas do it and cops shoot 'em. That's the American way, and we like to have things our way.

guess you didn't see The Great Debaters, This Christmas, Perfect Holiday, or any of the other recently released pictures with mostly African American cast. Movies are stories, violence, sex, drugs does good at the box office, when you don't go see the other movies that are about other topics, than the executives are making business decisions, so you will see more of these. Stop complaining and start going out and supporting the movies that you want to see. Same goes for music.

I agree I myself have some execs waiting on some of my scripts now that are within the same nature!! So this is true!! People enjoy this stuff, and it shows the TRUE colors of this society, and not only in U.S but often times this happens in other countries as well!!

Hey, I do more than talk about it, I make sure to talk about it with youth to help with critical thinking 2 make better decisions. But I'm in India, & it still seems that the non Black audiences can only stand to see us in these minstrel shows. I have 2 reviews on youtube about the Great Debaters AND why folk with movie going cash rushed to see American Gangster instead. Here in India they were not given a chance, the market dominates the few American films people get to see- same back home.
diepiriye- I ... ( 3 months ago by blacktreemedia)
diepiriye- I understand your frustration. But their are good films featuring black stars, or produced by black people. The Great Debaters was one of them, I Am Legend, is another, I mean the whole movie featured Will Smith and 5 other actors, two of which were African American, 1 Brazilian, and 2 White people, and some extras. You can't point to one picture, like American Gangster, which was a good movie by the way, Produced by Brian Grazer(not black by the way) and say that is a minstrel show.
(diepirye cont....) ... ( 3 months ago by blacktreemedia)
(diepirye cont....) Nor can you say that is all that we Produce or star in even if you were to consider it a "minstrel show". The Great Debaters was a great film, should have got a nomination over a Michael Clayton. Tim Story did the Fantastic Four, F. Gary Gray did Italian Job and Set It Off, Spike did 25th Hour and Inside Man +, making a film is an enormous accomplishment, and I am just happy about the great ones we have. American Gangster had two African American Academy Award Winners!
i mean i respect ... ( 3 months ago by blacktreemedia)
i mean i respect your opinion, and I appreciate your participation in the discussion, and maybe it is possible that your point of view from India would be different. But I am also sure their are people here in America that have the same sentiment. I just feel like we focus so much on the negative that we don't see the positive. The same goes for music, hip hop is not just the songs you hear on the radio, but nobody buys the other stuff because they can't find it. BUT IT IS THERE.
Of course there are ... ( 3 months ago by diepiriye)
Of course there are 'alternatives' but when the production & dissemination of art is market driven, & the primary audience is white & they like to see themselves empowered over us (i.e. colored as minstrels) then how do we get to control the predominate images of us? Or how to alter that view? Of course my family worked hard to expose me, but doing the same fr today's youth is a full time job- teaching us to love ourselves despite and in spite of these images. Hard Out Here for a Pimp or Crash?

The Great Debaters was anything but a great film. And I am Legend was garbage compared to the original or even the Omega Man. Stop fucking whinging. Why do you think Lord Of The Rings was so popular?
"why isn't ironman ... ( 2 months ago by ebeneezzer)
"why isn't ironman black?" Because he is a white character, invented by whites and marketed to a white audience. He is FUBU -For us. By us.

But, as corny as some of the lines were, especially those lines that Keanu had with his girlfriend, I still remember in New Jack City, when Ice-T's character is testifying against Nino Brown and the prosecutor, Ms. Hawkins (or as Nino called her, Mizzz Hawkins), asks Ice-T if Nino Brown sells drugs or something to that effect, Ice-T says "Does Michael Jordan slam dunk?" A very lame attempt by Mario Van Peebles to sound cool.
