As far as I am concerned, any exposure for non-Hot Club violin in jazz is a good thing.

I took the liberty to check out your playing. You have good intonation and sense of rhythm and good volume. However, your sound is HARSH! I wonder if it is your instrument or if your attack is too nervous. Perhaps you have such a strong reaction to Regina because her sound is so sweet? Also, are probably misunderstanding her playing "out" for bad intonation. Look at my earlier posts in this thread for detailed explanation.
If you are refuring ...( 4 months ago by paganini60)
If you are refuring to me, I don't know where you heard my playing, I don't have any videos posted. As far as your taunts to this red whoever guy, why do you care, if you are so hot, why don't you post your hot jazz fiddle???
OK well then ...( 4 months ago by TV3020001)
OK well then scratch those comments. RE: RED, he claimed that he could play better than RC. He posted a version of his playing a phrase from the solo. It was out of tune, out of rhythm at 1/2 speed. He eventually came to understand that even if he could correct those issues, IT WAS IMPROVISED. I don't play fiddle. I play bass. I am going to post Dewy Square when its ready. Jaco once said it took him 9 yrs to get DonnaLee presentable.

I received your message but did want to respond to your post publicly for reasons that should become apparent. You said that RC only got where she is because she's black. This is not only offensive to her and her efforts, people who are her fans but to African Americans generally. I don't know of ANYTHING (except being a corporate rapper at a major label) where being black makes it easier to make progress. Such a statement contradicts common sense and statistical reality.
yeah reading my ...( 4 months ago by paganini60)
yeah reading my post again, it is a bit harsh. The point is that if she was white, she would not have had the breaks that she has had. I should have just said, she didn't deserve the breaks and fame she got compared to the talents of other players, but hey, she got the marketing and there ya go! I doubt she would be offended by anything I say on a youtube post, lets face it, she is the one with the success, not me.
I'm glad that you ...( 4 months ago by TV3020001)
I'm glad that you saw the harshness in that post. I'm also happy that a frank exchange of ideas has remained about ideas and not disintegrated to personal attacks. I feel that same way about Vanilla Ice, Diana Krall, M&M, Chris Boti, Michael Bolten, Al Jolaon and a host of other "white" musicians. But, I don't hold it against them personally. They are just doing their thing and the "record machine" figured out how to make a buck off of the irony of them doing something thought to be "black".

I just checked out the video of Kristian playing Secret Love. Great swing feel and phrasing! I can really hear a lot of Svend in his playing. Thanx for the suggestion and for breaking up this pointless and ongoing debate!

Hey I thought we were done here. And I'd like you to show me where I said I could play better than her please. Even though that may indeed be true I don't think I said that. There are plenty of musicians that are better than her too. I don't know who you are or why you think you need to jump up and hit somebody every time they say that they don't like how she plays but you really should learn to accept that other people don't necessarily enjoy hearing her play. There's nothing wrong with that.
Ok there are people ...( 3 months ago by TV3020001)
Ok there are people who don't like her playing. Sorry guy. Your "name" came up and I wanted to explain the exchange. I think that thoughtful, musically informed critiques are what make the world go round. It just seems that RC seems to bring out hateful, personal attacks. I wonder if her winning the McA grant causes some jealousy. What do you think?

Wow. To be honest I didn't know that had happened. I feel really stupid now. Well that could be the case. In all truthfulness I think she's an excellent player but I just don't like her style. It's cool that everyone has their own ideas though. That could cause reason for some conflict among thoughts though yeah I agree on that.

Since I don't believe in re-incarnation, the conclusion is that Regina studied Stuff Smith's techniques to the fullest extent. Over 67000 viewings? Wow! Regina is a delight for jazz fiddle lovers.

Wow! I didn't know about Stuff...I typed his name in to youtube and I was amazed...I think you're right. She is good but compared to him she sounds more technical.

Stuff was born Hezekiah Leroy Gordon Smith, used the word "stuff" often in conversation, eventually was nicknamed. I have fair amount of his recordings, they're all on vinyl. Gotta learn how to convert analog to digital because I miss listening to his work. Its so good to know that others are interested in jazz violin. Its surreal about Regina because she has mastered his technique to the ultimate.
Technique is ...( 1 month ago by Oakhollm)
Technique is important, but it should only be a tool. Jazz is a language. And like other languages, it is hard to master.
We find violinists playing jazz, and we find jazzmusicians playing the violin. To me,the approach really makes a difference.
Playing the violin is extraordinary difficult, but basically, once the musician has reached a certain technical level, it is just an instrument used to speak the jazz-language, making it no different than trumpets, saxophones etc. Stuff spoke it!!!

Now everyone, play this video, close your eyes, and ask yourself... is this a a violinist playing jazz, or a jazz musician playing violin? To me, it's very obvious. I'm an aspiring jazz violinist and I just don't consider Regina Carter to be a strong jazz musician. I mean, she's playing on albums with Kenny Barron, Danilo Perez, Chris Potter... There's just no comparison. This is coming from someone who plays violin, so i'm not against the instrument or anything!

as a jazz violinist ...( 1 day ago by andr923)
as a jazz violinist myself, I'm not the biggest fan of Regina Carter's jazz vocabulary. It sounds very cliche to me! But I'll tell you one thing, she can swing her ass off. Feel is just as important as the notes when it comes to jazz, probably more important actually. Which is probably why, a lot of people like her. And she's a great violinist and gets great sound.
Also, check out my page for some more jazz-violin videos of my compositions at Berklee
