there's a difference between directing a commercial (being hired to create advertising) and dropping a Nike ad into the middle of The Elephant Man. I think disingenuous is the last thing I would call Mr. Lynch.

sure there's a difference... and there's a relationship. that's worth exploring. My guess is that lynch internally acknowledges the connection and is slightly embarrassed by that. That's why he's avoiding the pertinent question with this child like response that excites and distracts the audience.

Unless he was paid for it, it's not "product placement." Sometimes it's easier just to use the Coke machine that was already on the scene of the set they were using. Authenticity, man.

It's only shitty if it's unrelated to the story and given centre stage. I mean, if you watch Back to the Future, part 2 especially, it is packed with product placement - still a good movie. If the movie is good, putting commercials in there won't hurt it that much, but overall Lynch is correct. BULLSHIT!

Although DL's comment is not specifically about commercials, product placement is insidious. When I look at all the useless crap I demanded as a small child because I saw TV commercials for them, I get disgusted: Wonder bread, Stripe toothpaste, PF Flyers, Bosco..., the list is endless. It was driven home recently when my five-year-old daughter asked my wife for Finding Nemo on Blu-Ray for Christmas. We don't even own a Blu-Ray player, so you know she heard it from the goddamned Disney Channel.
