Satire did exist before Vaudeville you know, Vaudeville started in America in the 1830's but it was copied from British and French variety performances, they just called it Vaudeville to make it sound exotic to Americans, its not even an actual word.

Hopefully this won't turn into another "yuh-huh"/"nuh-uh" youtube debate... I was talking about stand-up comedy specifically, not general satire. I agree that stand-up comedy has its roots in European forms of humor; but the kind of stand-up routine Gervais does here is specifically modelled on American stand-up. I'm sure if you asked him, he would admit that. And just because Vaudeville is a coined word to sound exotic does not mean that it's not a word; words all have to start somewhere.
