Its ownership was given back to Japan in 1964 but American and Japanese troops are stationed there for training purposes at different times (smthing like 350), which I think is hinted in the song (gator squares?). the island hosts only one army canteen, which 'probably' relates to the chow but no rolls left! lol Interestingly enough Iwo -Jima is the only island during conflict to have both warring nations meet up each year to revist the site and shake hands.

Aight everybody: There are two Iwo Jimas. One is an island occupied by Japan in WWII, and was the sight of a very bloody battle by the US to take it. The other is a ship, the USS Iwo Jima, which is named after the battle. These guys are on the ship, and the song is about being stuck on it.

My great uncle was Ira Hayes, my grandfather always talked about him, I never met him though. I was actually invited to go on the maiden voyage of the last "Iwo Jima" built in Pascolousa, MS. This was a great experience for me, I met survivors from the actual battle of Iwo Jima, also Jack Lucas, and "Woodie", who won the "Medal of Honor".
