Ok. If you remember at the beginning of the film, Merrin is challenged by Satan in the desert of Northern Iraq. A figure with the statue representing Satan stands on one side and Merrin on the other, at the top of a hill. This settles the duel. Now, the reapearence of this figure in Reagan's room, is to remind Merrin that this is the challenge that Satan offered him back in Iraq. The pending duel, the battle between them.
