This one hasd not been mastered, you are right. I have the mixed feelings about re-mastering or not. It is an open question - like colouring old black/white movies or not...
The pun replaced ...( 1 year ago by barbcard)
The pun replaced the words just a gigolo with just a jig I know--the ironically used racist word is jig, which, of course has other meanings.
Strange that ...( 1 year ago by barbcard)
Strange that someone keeps blocking my explanation of the pun: instead of "just a gigolo" he ironically says
"just a jig I know."
sorry for repeating ...( 1 year ago by barbcard)
sorry for repeating the message and for assuming it was being blocked because it was not PC...anyway to end the whole business and go on to more important things, jig was slang for Negro back then.

I also got quickly lost in the proper answer-question sequences. But now, when we look back, finally everything becomes clear again. I love this dialogue (trialogue?) of us, though. It reminds me of the scene I saw a long time ago in a noisy half-ruined bus in 1960s, in a communist Poland, where two elder men and one woman tried to talk being not able to hear the partner :-) This still imperfect system of You Tube chat has been such a bus to us.

YouTube has expanded my knowledge of music of the 1920s far beyond the confines of the USA. I'm finding so many familiar "American" songs that started out in Europe. Where did this melody begin? Argentina? Germany? Thanks for posting your collection.

When I was a kid I heard another (less touchy) pun on this song title. It was a knock-knock joke some old TV comedy like "My Three Sons."
"Knock knock." "Who's there?" "Chester." "Chester who?" "(sung)Chester Gigolo..."
The composer's name ...( 1 year ago by 240252)
The composer's name was Leonello Cassucci so the tango must have been originally Italian, I guess (though the only Italian version of it I ecer heard was one sung by the popular Italian singer Mina, back in 1970s or 1980s.

Sch öner Gigolo, armer Gigolo,
Denke nicht mehr an die Zeiten,
Wo du als Husar,
Goldverschnürt sogar,
Konntest durch die Straßen reiten.
Uniform passée,
Liebchen sagt adieu,
Schöne Welt, du gehst in Fransen.
Wenn das Herz dir auch bricht,
Zeig ein lachendes Gesicht.
Man zahlt, und d u mußt tanzen
Wunderbar!
