Unbelievable how different Rachmaninoff and Richter thought about this piece.I find this to be much more interesting phrase by phrase,but the Richter to be far more moving and passionate.Here Sergei seems to be thinking along quiet Cortotian lines.

How does approaching a piece of music from a composer's standpoint different from a player's? Is he more acute and precise at distinguishing the different parts, like the climax, and piecing them together into a whole? I think Rachmaninoff's style is very unique, even though I can't really describe how or why. He takes a lot of freedom with music and every piece he played seems so connected to him, as if he wrote the music himself...
