The media regularly use public opinion polls in their reporting of important news stories. But how exactly do they report them and to what end? In this insightful and accessible interview, Professor Justin Lewis demonstrates the way in which polling data are themselves used by the media to not jus
t reflect what Americans think but instead to construct public opinion itself. Addressing vital issues (e.g., the role the media play in "manufacturing consent" for political elites, what polls really tell us about public opinion, what Americans actually think about politics), Constructing Public Op
inion provides a new way to think about the relationship between politics, media and the public. Exploding the myth that most Americans are moderate or conservative, Constructing Public Opinion demonstrates the way in which political elites help to promote the military industrial complex and how th
e media sustains belief in an electoral system with a built-in bias against the interests of ordinary people. Well illustrated with graphics and many examples of media coverage, it is the first film of its kind to present a critical analysis of media and public opinion.

Good general info, a bit misleading in calling a myth. there is no creation of a need or desire, but a push pull relation on what is prioritized between the people, media and those of power.

Brilliant! And the world is realizing that we need more documentaries like this--which deepen our understanding--- and less of the evening news. That which matters most does NOT change hour by hour.

Yes, but is this film arguing that 'civil liberty, non-monetary issues' are not as important as 'economic/monetary issues'?

You can't rely on polls anyway. Polls and statistics are often inaccurate - and sometimes (often) the results are slanted or misused.

Video makes good points UNTIL it gets the part when it says there were not significant differences between Bush and Gore. Anyone who can say that after years of Bush has some very odd standards!

According to polls, 85 % of Americans support Israels policy in the Middle East. The US mass media is largerly controlled and owned by Israel-friendly Jews. One can't trust these poll results. They are in a way manufactured by the same people who ordered/bought the polls.
