In this excerpt of the 1995 film "The Written Face (
書かれた顔)" by Daniel Schmid, Tamasaburo talked about being an onnagata (female role specialist). This clip also includes footage of him dancing at 6, a section of the kabuki play "Tsumorokoi Yuki No Seki No To (積恋雪積扉)", plus an additional interview of Sugimura Haruko (杉村春子)

I don't want to be rude or something. but Tamasaburo is without playing a role very feminine, too. is that because of his female role, or is he gay? I respect homosexual people, I just want to know if his role influences his moves in the real life, or is he an onagata, because he is so feminine?... I don't know much about Kabuki, sorry

You don't have to be gay to be feminine. Males acting as females are one of the most traditional conventions of Kabuki theater... Moreover, onnagata roles and acting styles are often passed on in acting families, from father to son. So I guess it would have to be really difficult if being gay was a prerequisite to being an onnagata. Furthermore, currently many Kabuki actors switch between playing female and male roles...

Great interview. I'm doing research on Kabuki and this gave me a lot of info as well as sources. From what I've seen this interview, this actor has my highest respect. Btw, when they showed the clips of Tamasaburo when he was a child, I thought those were puppets! SO KAWAII~~~~~*hearts*

Fascinating interview and Thanks for posting this for us to enjoy. I don't know why this stands out in my mind, but my wife and I watched Kabuki in a theater in Japan and it struck me as the most appealing acting that I have ever seen on a stage. Simple scenes of a woman (onnagata) walking through the rain, and another walking with a friend stand out in my mind. So totally feminine. That was 15 years ago
