I hope he did. His music is one of the things that makes me forget about the world for a little while. I regret that I never had a chance to meet him or see him live. RIP Richard, you are missed.

If you get the chance, you should read Levon's (semi)-autobiography. He mentions some pretty moving things about Richards death that I think answer your question. Pick up the book, it's a great read.

This was before drugs and alcohol ravaged his voice, what a talent he was! As Levon Helm once said, Richard truely was the vocal talent in the Band.

Please remember that Bob Dylan himself mentioned that he HELPED Richard write this song. It was Richard's brainchild. There will never be someone else like Manuel. The man is such a legend.

Even though Dylan may have helped Manuel write the lyrics, which are brilliant, the real genuis of this song is in the music and particularly in the incredible organ work of Garth Hudson, although the talent is spread pretty damn evenly throughout this band. The most appropraite pick for the their name: The Band
