Ninja, you're ...( 5 months ago by ernesttubb)
Ninja, you're probably wrong on two counts: (1) He may be swimming a bit slower than normal to make sure his technique is visible to the camera, and (2) good technique makes a swimmer look deceptively slow, when really he's slicing through the water very efficiently. When I started, I thrashed around and thought I was going fast. Then I studied proper technique - now, I feel like I'm swimming slowly, but my times are MUCH faster than they were back then.

right, so you can all swim faster than his 1:48 200m free? no, i didn't think so. his technique was always a bit strange because he had one straight arm recovery, one bent. but hey, there's nothing wrong with that. there are world record holders with both techniques. he has good body posture, good roll, nice EVF with high elbow. good SDK. hard to criticise really.

I just learned to swim a year or so ago and only had a few coaching lessons . . can someone try to explain (politely) how the arms work? Mine tend to be straight then pull because I feel like I need to reach to have speed and get the water away. When i try to imitate people who seem to raise their elbows I feel like I don't move. ?

Mmmm, i guess your arms act like a windmill? is that true? Try to swim with your arms touching the water(just bearly touching it), from your hip to the front of your head, thats how i learned to do a "good" stroke, when u managed to do that, just do the same, just raising your arms more, without touching the water, hope you understood me, kinda hard to explain in other language =P
I totally agree ...( 2 months ago by chuchofreeman)
I totally agree with you. In every activity you do, you have to look(and be) smooth, that's the best way to minimize the lose of power and speed. If you see the underwater camera of the competitions it seems that the swimmers are not using all their power, but they actually go very fast.

Actually, Bill is ...( 3 weeks ago by Percy74)
Actually, Bill is swimming pretty fast in this video: the Swim Smooth website (which is where this comes from) says that they taped him swimming a 400m at approx 30-32 strokes per 50m at a steady 1 minute 10 seconds for each 100m. That is much faster that most casual swimmers can sprint at full speed!
So hes not swimming slowly. He just has beautiful technique.
