Mario Del Monaco is one of three or four of my favourite tenors. His "Dio, mi potevi scagliar" or "Forse la soglia attinse", or "Amor ti vieta", or e.g. "L
´anima ho stanca" are unrivalled. Only Domingo (mainly as Radames or Cavaradossi) or Corelli (as Chenier or Manrico) there is possible to compare with his vocal beauty... sometimes, namely in Amor ti vieta ("vieta") or Forse la soglia ("palpito", "sotto") or Lamento (phrase "il dolce sembiante" - v
ocal "A") are his vocals incomparable beautifull...

Thank you for your kind words, have you actually heard Mr. Burke singing Nessun dorma, or are you just SHOUTING?
Well Puccini heard Tom Burke sing and as was the COMPOSERS right, he thought Mr. Burke did not embellish songs that were scored in Puccins mind to be sung in a certain way.
Now iv'e got nothing but admiration for Del Monaco, but musically his and all other Nessun Dorma's are rhythmically flawed..but im spolied, because iv'e got Tom Burkes version.

he makes it sound so easy. normally this would be a good thing but in this case, it sounds better if one gives the impression that it require vast energy. the overall performance was superb though (I'm just a tough critic of professionals). his voice is truely the right type to sing this piece (so many lyric tenors fail miserably or hurt themselves). naturally large volume and unforced all the way through PS: I would kill for that flabergastingly amazing squillo!

Oh dear the memories! I LOVE del Monaco - and think fondly of the times of constant war with my late uncle who hated him because he thought he was 'roaring'. Okay.. he did roar at times (Des Grieux calling for his elephants or Don Jose turning into a hero..;) - but was there ever a more magnificient voice?? To me, an opera just isn't the same without him, blame me if you like. RIP Mario you left a treasure to the world!

Probably, you misunderstood me. I didn't say that he is not 100% Italian, but that he is not only the greatest *Italian* tenore di forza. Meaning that he is, if not THE greatest, then at least one of the greatest tenori di forza of all times, NO MATTER whether Italian, German, or whatever else.

He can't nail that semi-final high note very long, but otherise glorious. Love the slow tempo. Used to see del Monaco in the 1960's in Los Angeles when the San Francisco opera would come down for two months. The rap against him was he was a shouter--no pianissimo. But who cares.

phantom4087,Please go into search engine space on You Tube and put in the name Tom Burke and there will be a few of his pieces of his as a result. I tried before to put the web address by copying it to You Tube but it won't take. Let me know if you any more problems with it.
