The expression at 3 ...( 3 months ago by BAITOVIN)
The expression at 3:50 is perhaps what forshadows his entire symphonic career: that angry, agitated language for which Beethoven was so universally known.

beethoven was certainly one of the greatest, if not THE greatest. he was exceptionaly good with finishing pieces, there is not one finale of his works that i've heard and hasn't blown me away!

Several composers are the Best. Vivaldi, Verdi, F J Hayden. Vivaldi is the Best at evoquing and painting conversation with Nature and Bethoven for me and for me only he is Best at Recapturing Confidence that verges on arrogance without getting there, he pulls back with humble flutes and oboes...I agree at he end I come back to Ludwig von Beethoven

I don't think ...( 2 months ago by DeepGrey)
I don't think that's correct... the Wikipedia article on Beethoven says he began to lose hearing in 1796, but that doesn't mean he was completely deaf at that time.
I read that Symphony no. 2 was composed in 1801-1802
Also in the article "Despite his obvious distress, however, Czerny remarked that Beethoven could still hear speech and music normally until 1812"
It's difficult to ...( 2 months ago by leomulder)
It's difficult to define because his deafness, obviously, wasn't something simply abrupt. A good reference about his loss of hearing is the Heiligenstadt Testament, from 1802. Since then until 1817 he couldn't talk without book conversations.

wikipedia is a very bad site to reference...its basically written by everyone, those who are educatecd to those who have no idea what they are talking about. it was his 9th symphony, not his second that he composed while deaf. look at a real encyclopedia...not that BS wikipedia...
Actualy,he started ...( 1 month ago by Historiwa)
Actualy,he started the ninth before the fifth. He put it aside and finished AFTER he was deaf. He had discussed using Sciller's "Ode to joy" in the late 1790's. Therefore he had sound hearing until after at least the fifth nad undoubtedly later.

What I can't take ...( 1 month ago by dcb01ene2000)
What I can't take from Karajan is the fact that it's all about himself. He has, must be the center of everything. Honestly, and I think I'm not wrong in saying this, Beethoven's music was, is and will be way greater than any musican. But of course that doesn't mean that this interpretation is bad or disrispectful. Not at all. He always had a commitment for excellency and will be one of the greatest conductors of all times... but was it really necessary to be always the center of attention?
Personally, I'm ...( 1 month ago by dcb01ene2000)
Personally, I'm unable to name only one. In my opinion, it's just impossible. Beethoven's music has things that you can't find in others, but others' music also has things that you can't find in Beethoven. But surely he is one of the best of all times, no question about it.
