I live less than an hour from NYC. That morning, I watched my co-workers try to call out on our overloaded switchboard to find out if their friends and family were ok (not all of them were). My roommates' friends stayed with us for a few days because they did not want to watch Manhattan smolder from their apartment in NJ. Our leaders could have been somber, but resolved; they could have given some indication that they were committed to leading our country through this tragedy. Instead, they staged a high-school chorus-like sing-a-long asking an imaginary sky fairy to "bless" us. Nothing could have made it more clear that they were utterly clueless. I'm not overstating it when I say I was as affected by this display of desperation and ineptitude as I was watching the video of the planes hit the WTC.
