On the evening of January 21st, 2008, TWC encountered a heavy power surge which inadvertently stopped national broadcast. This video show's that TWC had to revert the satellite/national feed to older weather icons from 2006 for reasons unknown. Around 4:10 AM, Rich Johnson begins giving weather reports in between forecasts, with still some technical difficulties.

Actually, TWC had a serious electrical problem. The videos you saw with Rich Johnson contained the backup equipment. :)

I'm still wondering why the Junior had the LDL on for most of the time but the IS/XL didn't.

Because the is Junior older, I would assume that its update status is limited, whereas the IS/XL are consistently updated from TWC. Because TWC went down, the IS and XL had no immediate data to sync with TWC, thus causing the units to shut down. But that's just my guess...

Yea, Beanboy noted on my vid that the observations the Junior had on the LDL were from 10:30 PM the night before (which was approximately when the outage occurred). So basically probably what happened was when they went to the earth station, they may have attempted to switch on all the STARs but only got the 4000/Jr. on. I don't know if it was the fact the IS's/XL's could not get data (the IS is good at improvisation when there is a lack of data).

I bet the Jr. kicking in has a lot to do with TWC possibly reverting to their old headquarters -- it's possible the equipment at TWC's old studio was never upgraded to activate the newer STARs. Also those are the first isobars I've seen on TWC in a long time. Sad.

Great clip, I remember that night. Didn't know it was a water leak that caused the power surge, from what people have said here.
To anthropolemic: those were actually streamlines, not isobars! But overall I agree with you.
