Well despite how funny this is, and how pointless it seems. Believe it or not its actually good advice. If you see the flash and your not already toast that means your not near ground zero and yes getting behind something would be a good idea because the shockwave will be coming next. Light travels faster than sound and materials :)

Read up some stories of people who traveled trough Chernobyl or were in Hiroshima while the bomb exploded. It will give you insight about what you really can do. Radioactivity is some evil fuckin' shit.

Of course now we know that these films were produced to prevent mass panic in the event of an atomic bomb attack, especially when children were involved. Ducking and Covering would not protect you from an atomic bomb explosion, but it would help you stay calm if you were far away enough from them blast.

I have been told all my life this video is mere propaganda and it is totally ineffective. Having watched it now, I see it is the exact opposite. Obviously most of the people who say this believe it unquestioningly because they have been told this false claim, and the ones who first made this false claim failed to observe the likely possibility that you won't necessarily be at ground zero! Obviously there's nothing you can do if you're too close to ground zero. But this video doesn't even (cont.)

(2) once claim that if you duck and cover you WILL be "SAFE". They said "SAFER". They were very scientific and cautious about not making bold and unrealistic claims, I thought. Indeed even a sheet of paper could protect a great deal from the immense infrared and visible light energy which is often powerful enough to set black cloth or paper on fire from miles away. If you're at the right range of distance, doing as this video says could very easily make the difference between surviving and not.

(3) What it said about the likelihood of the attack coming with warning was also true, and the fact that you have a few moments of warning when you start getting hit with the light before the blast wave hits. If you're far enough away to have a chance of surviving, such will be the case. It will do nothing to protect you from the gamma ray blast and fallout later but if you survive the blast, you probably are far enough away that the radiation won't kill you if you then get to a fallout shelter.

(4) And the metaphor of the monkey and the turtle is only a metaphor. The monkey doesn't represent the USSR, he blew himself up with his own firecracker, the turtle doesn't represent the US (he didn't throw a firecracker back at the monkey), all it's saying is that it's better to take cover from an explosion than not to for crying out loud! If someone throws a live grenade 50 feet away you should duck and cover for that too even though yes at ground zero that would kill you for sure as well!
