The story line based on 2 little girls, Satsuki and the younger sister Mei moving with their dad to the countryside to be closer to the hospital their mother is in. Satsuki and Mei encounter the ancient guardian of forest -- Totoro after moving in. It was said that only in the eyes of innocent children could Totoro be seen! Satsuki and Mei soon developed close friendship with Totoro.

It was unbelievable when this hit California there was also a terrible ruinous movement to get these movies blocked by fanatics. they were questioning the Spiritual ideas behind the japanese ways and insights. So racist this element which exist in the world. to think of other animation forwarded into the world which should have been blocked for them to say anything on such a gentle piece of art...Nothing could touch.

I am living in Japan for quite a while. I was always wondering why Totoro was not a success in the US. Could this be the main reason?. If so, it is really a pity. It is an awesome movie. I wish I had watched it when I was a kid

There are millions upon millions across the world who freely buy according to thier spirit which is not on ANY STATISTICS. Such a beautiful movie... I feel so peaceful when I watch it and when I listen to the music. If you've ever had that sleeping gas they give you at the hospital, you know the feeling I'm talking about.

totoro was actually based on Miyazaki's own personal life. His mother was ill and he and his brother claimed to see forest sprites. He said that if he made the main characters boys, it would've broken his heart.
