Born in the USA is a patriotic song. It gave the hundreds of thousands of Vietnam era lower and middle class Americans who had someone "put a rifle in their hands and send them off to a foreign land to done kill the yellow man" a voice. The song is about how fucked up life can be in the USA if you aren't at the top of the food chain... giving those without power a voice and speaking for the working class American is EXACTLY what makes Born in the USA a patriotic song.

I've been an R.E.M. fan for a very long time and Michael Stipe has always done lead vocals for the group and yes, only he does the vocals on this song on their CD without Bruce Springsteen as he does on all other R.E.M. CDs. Enjoy!
