Here is a short video I created for the Savannah College of Art & Design Senior Industrial Design Show in June 2006. I basically just went around the Gulfstream Center for Design asking students "What is Industrial Design." Keep in mind this was shot during finals, so most of these kids have been up for 36 hours plus.

if product were illegal ID would be charged with possession and intent to distribute! all you guys (IDpeople) do is creating the JUNK of the future and making the big wheels of this economic evil empire turn faster every christmas . i mean ... what the F was wrong with my old old stuff ,, the stuff i bought 2 months ago?... what is styrofoam ?.... do i really need a damn "swiffer"!?..

im an industrial designer too and id say industrial design is manipulation of unknown people's lives in the way you cannot predict :)

I'm studying Architecture but always had a heart of Industrial Design. Now I am at a sort of crossroads and not sure whether to continue studying Architecture or go for Industrial Design. Architecture I find interesting but not stimulating (I have 14 subjects in my second semester of my first year and 28 compulsory contact hours a week). Anybody got advice?

industrial design ROCKS! i'm an industrial design student... a designer is someone who knows the way to make a concept come true...is the most beautiful work in the world... but no everybody can do that...

usergroup X, did you ever stop to think that I.D can be used to help people? One example I can think of is improving products for people with a disability and help them live a better quality of life. Yes Industrial Design can be about aesthetics but it can also be about creating or improving a product that can provide better interaction with it's intended user.

Why are (almost) all the girls give intelligent answers about what ID is and the boys are lost for words. Yay, girl power! :-P

Id like to personally thank this video for my decision not to go into industrial design. Just look at the students, not much to aspire to. For me, I'll go with something useful like mechanical engineering and learn how render and make crap out of PVC on my spare time.

You cant just decide your whole outcome on a single video. Anything you come in contact with is a result of people like these students anyways. We'll I've gotten offers for Industrial Design and Interior Architecture and I'm picking the prior. I did a year of architecture and it wasn't stimulating. Btw you used CAD so you would have to know how to render in Industrial design.

You don't have to be an "Industrial Designer" to make a product though. I was set on ID at GaTech forever, but after looking into other schools and videos (not only this one, but it's the worst by far) I decided ME offered a bit more substance. I was a top artist at a magnet school, but "artists" are too different of a breed for me.

You can't base everything from this video. All courses are useful--it's to each of their own. Either you don't understand what ID is, or you just want to annoy people.

Apparently some of these kids don't know how to articulate what it is that inspires them. SCAD should consider Public Speaking courses in the curriculum. Thus giving their students some self confidence.

Actually we do thanks. Most of those students have been up for 3 days straight trying to knock out projects...so yes, we're going to be cracked out.

You are welcome ;) Though I still think its a matter of youth AND people who fall in the arts sometimes find it better to express themselves visually than through words. I wish scad had national accreditation, like a state university.

I think it is very difficult for anyone to express what Industrial Design is because the areas of interests are specific to the designer. There are dissertations, books, and thesis written around the rhetoric of design, asking " what is design?" The truth of the matter is that the term has not stabilized. Every institution calls it something different to narrow the focus or guide the academic discussion.

Im in I.D. at Humber I.T.A.L. in Toronto ( fin 3rd year). I think its not limited to anything or any one field. Its a design methodology that you develop(everyone has their own somewhat unique method) It combines knowledge of certain things like manufact tech, colour theory, ergonomics etc.. and you apply ur process which allows you to understand the problem then develop ideation, research and concepts that will solve the problem and make things better. Products, services, interfaces whatever!

I hear that.. people think we have bad time management skills but if you know anything about ID.. being up for 2-3 days with little or no sleep is a necessity sometimes! Oh and Sun Devil.. if your not an industrial designer you prob wont understand. The nature of I.D. is elusive and sometimes for people to describe, but its also what makes it one of the most versatile careers because it can be applied to almost anything to improve its function, usability, appearance, and overall value.

I think it would be taking things and making them more economical and ergonomical. Its probably mostly needed because in the engineering feild, its more often than not, left to the suits to get a product out, no matter where it is in the stage of design, a good example would be the space shutle challenger, some of the designers knew there were flaws, but because of deadlines, they pushed in through.
