Does anyone know where one can get a decent copy of the 1989 race, and I don't mean the boring version put out by Famous Cyling videos. I purchased that as soon as it hit the market in 1990 and immediately went back to watching the faded, static-ridden tapes I'd had from the television broadcast.

Andy Hampsten will tell you that Hinault wasn't BSing. His idea was that by attacking day after day, he would either take a victory no one could question or he would soften up Zimmerman and the others for Lemond. This makes sense, since if Hinault had really _only_ wanted to win for himself he would have ridden defense after getting yellow, not attacked again the very next day. Maybe it was a little selfish vis-a-vis Lemond, but it was never outside the context of good team tactics.

Yeah, but Hinault never liked riding defensively. Hinault was a power racer, he scared others into not attacking.
True: Hinault ...( 7 months ago by sjl62)
True: Hinault wanted to lead from the front like Merckx. But this wasn't his only trick. On that '85 stage to St. Ettienne Hinault let Lemond attack on the descent to gain time on Roche and Anderson while he himself "blocked." Hampsten's point that was that yes, Hinault always wanted to be the boss, but not outside of good team tactics.

Fignon had an excruciatingly painful saddle sore which made it hard for him even to sit - look at the way he keeps shifting in his saddle.
But that, along with tri-bars, helmets and a million other things, is part of the Tour; you race fate, the course and yourself just as much as you do your competitors.
1989 was also the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution. The French would have loved to have had a French winner that year. At least they got one with a French surname....

when the "89 tour de france" happened i remember it like it was yesterday, and that was an event that took over that summer. yes lemond used the different handlebars, but what i haven't seen anyone write, look at the two teams. Fignon was on a top 4 team, lemond was all by himself, now after seeing the modern "tour" what would a rider do today with a team all by himself.

that is true.... Greg was the best American ever. Armstrong was awsome, but he did not face the field class that Greg faced. Indurain, Rominger, Pantani, etc were on their way out when Armstrong started winning. He really didnt have many credible riders to race against compared to lemond.

people are so ignorant; they don't understand that athlethes naturally produce EPO. Just by riding ur bike a lot you produce a lot of EPO. Your body actually develops more if your a professional. If your a professional and you inject EPO into your system; eventually your system produces less EPO and relies on the injected EPO. So the truth is in the short run ( a race or 2 ) EPO could help but over the long tour its not going to decide it.

Merde...dommage, mais bon. Il en a quand meme gagner 2...c'est bien, et puis il n'y a pas de honte a perdre contre Lemond.
