the merchant of venice by william shakespeare
act iii - scene i SHYLOCK To bait fish withal: if it will feed nothing else, it will feed my revenge. He hath disgraced me, and hindered me half a million; laughed at my losses, mocked at my gains, scorned my nation, thwarted my bargains, cooled my friends, heated mine enemies; and what's his rea
son? I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer, as a Christian is? If you prick u
s, do we not bleed? if you tickle us, do we not laugh? if you poison us, do we not die? and if you wrong us, shall we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that. If a Jew wrong a Christian, what is his humility? Revenge. If a Christian wrong a Jew, what should his suff
erance be by Christian example? Why, revenge. The villany you teach me, I will execute, and it shall go hard but I will better the instruction.

he's not innocent, but Shakespeare has this way of turning around his characters and puzzling the audience. Here is this man about to be punished more cruelly than a Christian man would have been and his tough exterior has melted off. the audience feels sympathy for a character despite their prejudices and previous actions.

A very powerful speech. The director has certainly turned the characters around. It seems to ask 'Are we suppose to sympathise for one that is villian?' :S Who knows.

Yes Shylock is crossing the line, but do you really blame him? The Jews have been hated and persecuted throughout every generation since their very existence; not because of their actions, but merely because they exist. And lets look at the end of this play, Shylock gets completely screwed over. He has to give all his money to Antonio and is forced to convert to Christianity. What does that tell you?

I don't think Shylock crossed the line, ever. Everything he did was within the bounds of his bond, and thus judicially allowable. Parts of his speech seemed a little to powerful, but only for dramatic purposes to show how Jews had lived then, and the double standard applied to humans. This play shows that double standard not only thru Shylock, but Aragon also when he insists to see who's blood is redder, and for this reason its one of my favourites. I also think that Portia messed up the end.

Shylock's monologue here is really good, one of the most significant ones in the novel also. Love his expression here, clearly exemplifies his hatred for Christians and Antonio especially by questioning how a Jew is different from a Christian. Think he's the best role for Shylock (:

No, it is not. I challenge you to give me on fucking example where Jews have "corrupted" society, whatever that means. If anything, they make it better. Look at Israel. They took land the Palestinians had for a thousand years, and had done nothing with, and within 50 made it into a 1st world country. You can call them greedy or whatever else. I call them hardworking, thrifty, close-knit, and an example for the rest of the world to follow, instead of mock.

i think some of the guys have come here and repeated the same old anti semitist, xenophobic, racist message which directly contradicts with the message of the shakespeare which we can see from the lines. though it is ironic to see a man who lives 4 century ago from now can be more illuminated than a man of our time, it must also clearify why our modern societies must have some degree of hate speech policy to protect the values our societies and human dignity. so, i removed the messages of him.
