The original fugue is in D minor - I can imagine it was transposed when it was transcribed?

No,it is actually from the violin sonata in g minor (bwv 1001),the style of the piece is more violin then organ(bwv 539) style, the organ version itself was probably a transcription itself.I'm not sure though wether it was from this violin sonata or perhaps that the violin sonata was just later reconstructed by another composer, built on the original one of bach himself that already got lost.

btw, this is really one of my favourite bach fugues.I think it has exceptional lyrical quality and drive.Personally I like the piano version best, but it the fugue sounds great on all instruments really : )

Agreed. Transposed perhaps to a string instrument if need be but never to the actual. It's clearly Sonata in G Minor. And there is much debate whether it was lost or not. Anyone who knows Bach's work can hear (not from this) that it is his. This version is horrible. Absolutely fucking horrible.
