Joseph Alfred Souter (born February 28, 1940, in Atlanta, Georgia) is a Grammy Award-winning American singer-songwriter with a distinctive guitar sound.
Joe South had several mega hits in the late 1960s and early 1970s with songs such as "Don't It Make You Wanna Go Home" and "Walk a Mile in My Shoes". His biggest and most-remembered single was "Games People Play" (1969), a Top 10 hit on both sides of the Atlantic, which won the "Grammy Award for B
est Contemporary Song" and the prestigious "Grammy Award for Song of the Year", and which bears a striking resemblance to the children's gospel song, "I Don't Want to Be a Pharisee". It was featured on his first album, Introspect. He had met and was encouraged by Bill Lowery, an Atlanta music publi
sher and radio personality. He began his recording career in Atlanta with National Recording Corporation, where he served as staff guitarist along with other NRC artists Ray Stevens and Jerry Reed. South's earliest recordings have been re-released by NRC on CD. Joe South songs have been recorded by
other artists. They include Lynn Anderson's 1971 hit "(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden", Billy Joe Royal's hit "Down in the Boondocks," Deep Purple's "Hush" (a British hit many years later for Kula Shaker), the Osmonds' hit "Yo-Yo," and Elvis Presley's Las Vegas-era version of "Walk a Mile in M
y Shoes", also recorded by Bryan Ferry and Coldcut. South was also a prominent sideman, recording the memorable guitar part on Aretha Franklin's Chain of Fools, Tommy Roe's Sheila as well as appearing on Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde. He also played the electric guitar part that was added to Simon & Garfunkel's first hit, "The Sound of Silence".
The suicide of his brother Tommy drove South into a deep depression. Tommy had been his band's drummer and accompanied Joe not only in live performances but also on recording sessions of South-produced hits for other artists including Billy Joe Royal, Sandy Posey, and Friend & Lover.
Joe South was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1979 and is a member of the Georgia Music Hall Of Fame. In 1988 dutch DJ Jan Donkers interviewed Joe South for VPRO-radio. The radio show where they aired the interview also included four new songs but a new record didn't came
out. In 1994 Joe played in England. On september 13, 2003 Joe was inducted into Georgia Music Hall of Fame and played together with Buddy Buie, J.R. Cobb, Chips Moman at the induction ceremony.

Grew up on 10 acres of open field. It's gone now. Nothing encroached on life. Then I found myself in Vietnam. Always choke when I hear this song. But I love to listen to it. He had a couple of other hits that are favs too. Thanks for posting the song/video.

onceadad1, it's hard to know what to say to someone as mindless as you, but I'll try. What do you guys do, just take Dems (or liberals or blacks) and then add any one of the following slurs? Commies, Nazis, Jihadists, Feminazis, terrorists, black racists .. .? If you can't even get along with other white Americans, how will you get along in the big, diverse world? Can you please at least TRY to think before you post?

I do recall when I was small how my dog and me were runnin' free...runnin' through the fields so tall and so green, runnin' in and out and in-between, 'til the tassles of yellow did reach the blue of the sky..., then!, out of the fields and on to the road, just kickin' up the dust and watchin' it blow...

Joe South was way ahead of his time. This song is a bittersweet memory of the late 60s. Thanks Joe and I wish you all the best for your remaining years.

I love how JOE SOUTH makes you feel what he is singing. I left home early in my life and when I went back some 20 years later, I nearly broke down and cried because it just wasn't "home" anymore. I miss my old home so much and I know I'll never get it back the way it was....they called it "progress"...

That's exactly what I do; I try to recall only the good times of my younger days but every once in a while, something not so good will pop into my head. The lesson learned: our individual legacies are a composite of all that we were and still are.

Folks, where is Joe today. I wish he come by today. Believe or not I used this song with Lost In Space in hopes the Robinsons would eventually be rescued. Major. Don West (unfortunately after Commander John Robinson died 5 years ago DAMN sorry to be.:-() brought the Robinsons back to earth in all safety. Maj. West Landed the Jupiter 2 on Earth, and glory to be, the rest of the family was saved. So John Robinson should be forever a hero to our space program, Shit you not.

Murph I tried to write you but your friend thing has me blocked Mark Goddard was a part of a video 3 parts of LIS: The Journey Home (He brought the Robinsons home, even though John died 5 years earlier I think Pendergrafs has it. He made the ship models for F/S 2004, and Mark gladly helped out with it. I need you to add me as a friend to tell you the rest and send the vids. Mark wants to help us fans out, and I think he would support adding LIS background to the vids. Contact me for the rest
RIP John ... ( 2 weeks ago by capt777737)
RIP John Robinson-he never came home Also RIP to Dr. Zachary Smith (Jonathan Harris) who passed last year. LIS movie was great as 5 of the regulars were in the movie. Mark Goddard June Lockhart Angela Cartwight Marta Kristan Dick Nufeld who was the robot. So yes this movie was worth it's weight in gold alone. Thanks to Murph who wants to add an LIS video to this song. Makes me happy. and I know it would make LIS fans happy We got a group which I sent you. You should join. Mark would like it.

Murph, you should add this vid where Goober, Johnny and June are singing this song. Joe South and Co. Go Goober go sing it out. (Yes I'm a TAGS fan) People say June got the words wrong, well maybe not so. We change the lyrics at times (we have musicians license for that right.) Look at some of our bluegrass songs which has 30-50 verses. Keep on pickin, keep on yodeling. Got Time To Breathe, Got Time For Music... Briscoe Darling of The Andy Griffith Show (TAGS)

some of the 'not so good' memories are the best ones. i have found that the ones who love me most never said 'told ya so' (tho they had). they just said "it'll be okay" they had been there too, when they were young. what we learn most, i hope, are forgivness and kindness. that is home. home is where someone loves us. as we age, it becomes our job to open that home to our young. let them come home to a hug that says "it'll be okay".

Not just the South, ... ( 1 week ago by murphicus)
Not just the South, the greed does not recognize maps, as long as it can find greedy locals who go along with their plans. When I go home to Minnesota, Wal-Mart seems like the South's revenge for my hometown. When I grew up there were three hardware stores, four grocery stores, three clothing stores, along with the other small shops, there is one grocery store hanging on. Combined with the extermination of small farms, the mega-stores are like black holes sucking culture & spewing out plastic

I could not agree with you more..for a short while I went to school in a small Indiana town surrounded by family farms..some large..some small..both supplied that unique "small business" term most of us think of..however, today most of that "small business" land has been turned into subdivisions..and the gas station on the corner is being run by a guy from god knows where..how did some guy from India or Pakistan find his way to such a small dot on the map that makes up America?

Yes - what a great song. Makes you want to go back to 1969 when it was popular... What can grab your heart, and make it "hurt so good" better than a song like this one?
Fwiw, if you want to hear another great song along the same lines (i.e. similiar theme) find a way to give a listen to "Canned Goods" by a guy named Greg Brown.
My best to all you aging-gracefully old hippies out there...!

I'm totally big city, from the HEART of Chicago, and I can tell you that this man is a genius, and one of the most underrated singer/songwriters this country has ever produced. His message speaks to me as though we were both from the Southwest Side of Chicago. And that is Genius, and Art.
I hope someone will post FOOL ME.
