The 1979 race was the first time it was shown Live, Flag to flag. ABC Wide World of Sports showed the start, some of the middle portion, and the finish live, not the whole race.

I was in Boy Scouts and we used to go to Darlington every spring for the Rebel 500. I saw David Pearson win 3 times: 1974, 1976, and his final career win in 1980. I was also there in 1979 when he lost his left tires coming off of pit road. The Silver Fox will always be one of the all-time greats.

Ok, NASCAR FANS! This is how we had to watch the races back then. It seems like yesterday but THIS WAS THE BEST DAYTONA 500 FINISH EVER! We huddled around the TV getting antenna reception and SCREAMED at what we saw. True PETTY AND PEARSON fans and we couldn't believe what we were seeing. I get chills just watching this again. The drivers didn't whine or complain. This was true racing! Two REAL LEGENDS!
