My first try at making a movie in Sony Vegas 7. Please rate and comment.
In case you´re interested, here´s how it was made: Since I don´t know scripting, everything was captured from a first-person, in-game view with FRAPS. You won´t believe how many "takes" it took to get the footage I wanted. I used SMOD to to give me sticky-bombs, which I flew over and planted a
ll over Eli´s lab (his lab is located on the same map, and the displays in the game actually show an image being "filmed" by a virtual camera). I then flew back, positioned myself behind Kleiner and blew them up.
Then it was just a question of edit the thing together using Sony Vegas 7, which is
easily the most intuitive and fun to use professional program I´ve ever played with. While splicing together clips I noticed that the background sounds were cut off or wrong when switching scenes. Since all sound was on one track, there was only one option: to apply all the sounds, one by one, just
like they do in real movies. This actually proved to be the most time-consuming part because I first had to extract all HL2 sounds, then look up the ones I needed one by one and then apply them to the "movie" and make them blend together, adjusting speed and volume when needed. Some sounds could no
t be found, so I used substitutes which I got elsewhere, and then there were some custom sounds, like the crickets towards the end that were suprisingly hard to find. And selecting the right music to use at the right time wasn´t all that easy either.
Finally I added then Intro screen (which is kin
da silly, I just wanted to see what i could do with the video effects in Vegas, and it looks pretty sweet, I think) and title cards with various effects to the text, etc. The more you watch it though, the more flaws you find, so hundreds of little things were adjusted and corrected after everything
was in place.
