Originally, the song was first heard in Greece in 1927 by a Rebetiko Band. Rebetiko is a kind of music style that greek people of Smyrne were performing. Misirlu, means "Girl From Egypt" and the original lyrics of the song say about that girl. Dick Dale just rearranged the song at the mid '60s...

I've heard this song first(in a slow version though) in a episode of M*A*S*H. Trapper played it on a small guitar after a greek easter feast, so I assumed that this song is orignally from Greece.

Yup this song is Greek first performed by Michalis Patrinos' rebetiko band in 1927 as Panas correctly stated. Its nice to this a song like this which spans generations and cultures be so well known still. :)

The The Black Eyed Peas did "steal" it they did a cover of it, just as Dick Dale, Nick Roubanis and many others have since then. Musicians do that often you know, make covers of songs. I think the greatest compliment an artist can pay to another artist is when she/he does a cover of their song.
