Actually those throws are allowed. The throws that are not allowed are shoulder throws because contact between the two competitors is lost. Even hip throws are still allowed although it can depend on which judge you have. As the competitors didn't lose contact, what ao did was allowed.
What's not allowed is the set up. When he grabs the gi but doesn't throw inmediately. Grabbing the gi has been, quite recently, forbidden.

Agree with you Catbane. That guy would have take more penality 1 if I was the referee. Many throws are very rough. No Aiyer, the rules says that any throw above the pivot point is not alowed, and aka was really smashed on his back. But I also agree with you that it depends who's the ref. Grabbing has always been forbidden. Before you were not allowed at all. Today you can if you follow it by an attack. Of course many grab and let go...its ok :-) Regards.

...385 is getting overly-passionate with comments. I don't know the rules of this game but it seems the blue belted fellow was getting the best of the red belted guy but as I said, the rules are not known to me.

In the WKF regulation version 5.5c, Article 8 that an uncontrolable, i.e. "Dangerous or forbidden throwing techniques" are not allowed and can be given a penalty.

The actions of the competitor is the action of what their intention and actions are. You clearly see that his action was only to throw his opponent from height with effort to cause damages to his opponent and it is clearly a dangerous throw to me. OK, throws above the hip or shoulder is not allowed. However, ANY other throws lower than the hip may still considered as DANGEROUS throws, depending on its execution.

If you go through carefully on the Explanation clauses, You will find a lot of paragraphs mentioning safety, control techniques and something like "....so that a safe landing can be made"
Then again, I guess it is all depends on the referee. He is the one in-charge for that bout. If I was him, I would have given penalty to Ao, you may not.

I guess the point to be considered here is that Karate touranment is now a sporting event, not like what we used to do as full contact, bonebreaking deathmatches. The emphasis on the competition is to "Protect" the competitors. Intensionally causing harm to your opponent is not encouraged in modern Karate competition.

As you clearly see that Ao was doing it over and over again to harm his opponent just because he wasn't warned at the first time he did that throw. I guess it is we referee who needs to bring out the right concept/mind to the competitors. Otherwise, Karate competition will go back to the old days, another K-1, UFC or MMA tournament...without tradition value.

That's why Kata competition is still a very important part of Traditional Karate Tournament.
My opponent is not K-1, Tae kwon Do, Kyukoshin, Kung fu champion or whoever, it's me alone!!

Personally I see no problem with his throw. I do not see it as a dangerous throw. I am not a referee, I am however a competitor in the same category although not at the same level.

First of all, being a competitor and have the motivation to win is undeniable. At the same time, understanding the rules and the scoring system with help a lot in competition environment.
I used to be a competitor, whether the old 3 point system, new scoring system and now becoming a referee myself. It's all in the head and the thinking that make you a slightly better than your opponent.

If you do those then its all down to luck whether you will get a penalty or "Torimasen", NOT a point for sure. I guess 3 out of 4 referee would have given penalties for those throws.

i hope you oppinion changed in the last year because that was quite a stupid comment... you dont have an idea of what karate is, this is sports karate, they let their guard down in order to lure their opponent and then try to score a hit. i guarantee that this two could rip any sreet fighter to shreads in a real fight because the type of fighting would be different, here they are trying to score but they can break bones and open heads if they want, but in sport karate thats not the point.Got it?
