This video is totally toned down and doesn't tell the most important facts. In particular, Michelle slept with Denny in the Caribbean. John's inability to control Michelle is the inspiration for most of his songs, e.g., Monday Monday. The other thing is that Cass was totally *physically* in love with Denny, who couldn't do anything about it. I think the other documentary Straight Shooter is much more honest. That's PBS for you!

It's out on DVD. The best thing to do is read John Phillips 1988 autobiography Papa John. You get all the gory details there. Wikipedia already has some of them on the articles on him, the group and the other members. There are also memoirs on Denny Doherty's website.

Sorry, but this thing about Cass not having the range to suit Mk until she got a concussion sounds so bogus, even if it is true. He could have changed a note here and there and them songs would still sound great. Just another "something wrong with her until...." putdown, even if meant as some sort of compliment.

Give 'em a break! He never said there was something wrong with her, just that she didn't have the range he wanted and you can't just change a song a tone and a half lower and expect everyone else to be able to sing it. You'd have to be a musician to understand.

Listening to their singing---they don't seem to be straining to reach each note of the song, so they have plenty of reserve. I'm talking about a few notes, NOT a whole octave. Don't short-change them. I studied singing oh so many years ago, with concentration on Mozart arias, but you must be right for what do I know.
The whole hit-in-the-head-and-vocal range-increased story seems like a fairy tale. Did Mama C ever admit to it???? If so, I would love to see the video!
