you need to read ... ( 8 months ago by joreis88)
you need to read the posts carefully. NOBODY is saying double eyelids are not an Asian feature too. they're asking why Asians with single eyelids want surgery to have them made into double? if you want to change your single eyelids, you're saying they're NOT GOOD ENOUGH. that's the only reason people dish out all that money to get it done.

think you need to read posts better. nobody is saying some Asians don't have double eyelids. if you want single eyelids fixed, you are saying they're NOT GOOD ENOUGH, whether you want to admit it or not. otherwise, who would dish out all that money?

i mean it's not ... ( 7 months ago by yubi91)
i mean it's not like only white people have double eyelids, as some of you have already mentioned its true that over 50% asians have it too, and what about african people don't they have big eyes too, native indians?it's just annoying how white people have such ego that they think that their beauty is what should be considered standard.
i've seen it, tyra ... ( 7 months ago by yubi91)
i've seen it, tyra is either really stupid or she was just being told by the producers to attack that poor girl by saying she wasn't comfortable with her own heritage. doesn't she always say how proud she is of being black? african people have double eyelids too as do some other asian people. then why is she defending white people's point of view?
Asians do not ... ( 5 months ago by waltandmaggs)
Asians do not necessarily want "rounder" eyes as much as they want a fuller eye...a fuller almond-shaped eye. Eyelid surgery does not remove ones "asian-ess," it simply enhances it. No matter what surgery is performed, asians will always look asian...to think otherwise is to believe caucasians tan obsessively to rid their pale skin so they can be black. Absurd!
Although I concede ... ( 4 months ago by beachedwhale24)
Although I concede that those Asians who do undergo the surgery do not do it to look "American" or "part white", I do think there is a standard of beauty that they are aspiring to that is very caucasian. I don't think anyone will deny that the reason anyone gets plastic surgery is to become more attractive. But who or what defines what is aesthetically pleasing and what isn't? The thing about beauty is that it's volatile. Beauty standards have and will continue to change throughout the years.
The fact of the ... ( 4 months ago by beachedwhale24)
The fact of the matter is, high cheekbones, long legs, small noses, thin frames, and, yes, double eyelids are what people consider to be aesthetically appealing now. And a lot of these features are more often found in the Caucasian community (Please don't flame me here, I'm not saying they do not occur in other communities/racial groups...just that this combination of features occurs more often in the white community). These are the features that are predominantly seen as beautiful in the media.
I'm also not saying ... ( 4 months ago by beachedwhale24)
I'm also not saying that other more "ethnic" features aren't seen in the media... just that the majority of models/actresses or whatever have a very Caucasian form of beauty. And because our concept of beauty is shaped by what we see around us and what we are TOLD is beautiful, we do ascribe to Caucasian beauty. It's not a conscious decision. It's not like saying, I want this surgery bc it'll make me look white. It's more subtle than that. You have the surgery to look beautiful.
But beautiful is ... ( 4 months ago by beachedwhale24)
But beautiful is defined by what you see/are told is beautiful. For example, being thin wasn't considered beautiful until the 60's, when Twiggy's look launched the careers of other thin models like her. Not that this matters, but to maybe circumvent those who may say I'm racist... I am Asian American, and, not only am I proud of that, I think I am beautiful. But I do understand that what I see as pretty or attractive is determined by the media around me, which caters to a Caucasian standard.
Of course I'm not ... ( 4 months ago by beachedwhale24)
Of course I'm not happy that it does cater to a Caucasian standard... but to deny it just because it sucks seems silly to me. But the fact that beauty IS linked to Caucasian beauty is one way that racism still exists today... it's everywhere (institutionalized, etc). And the scariest thing about it is that it's subtle and therefore very psychologically damaging.
I'm caucasian with ... ( 3 months ago by reneen1018)
I'm caucasian with a double crease already but I'd love to make my eyelids bigger some time. Do they have a surgery for that?

beachedwhale, I ... ( 3 months ago by reneen1018)
beachedwhale, I think you're partly accurate but partly wrong as well. I can see why anyone would want this procedure...and I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with forced perceptions of beauty. Most people aren't having the fold in their eyes taken away...they still look Asian. I don't think it has much do with ethnicity. And, it may be a shallow reason, but let's face it: having a double eyelid makes it easier for women to do their eye makeup and gives them more choices.
Well i'm korean ... ( 3 months ago by chinomoreno2000)
Well i'm korean living in Australia and i'm not too fussed about how i look, but if i was given the option to get this done, i would. Obviously it would be primarily due to aesthetic factors, but also because my eyelashes droop downwards and obstruct my view, and this surgery corrects this a bit.
I didn't mean to ... ( 3 months ago by beachedwhale24)
I didn't mean to imply that once you have the surgery you would look "un-Asian", but that you would look more mainstream. The trend now is a tendency towards the exotic, which at times involves blending the features of people of color with that of white people. Hence the popularity of hapa or biracial stars. I guess, in my opinion, this surgery is another way to achieve that. Basically people who possess a very "white" beauty, but with a slight exotic twist.
Actually, you are ... ( 2 months ago by Chinamerican)
Actually, you are in luck - you probably have long eyelashes! Just get them permed :D If not that, then get a Shu Uemura or Shiseido eyelash curler and get acquainted with it. My eyelashes are like that and curling them really opens up the eye. Our eyes just look like that b/c our hair is straight and grows straight down.

people need to be proud of small breasts.
white people should stop getting boobhjobs!
beachedwhale24: I ... ( 1 month ago by benzride)
beachedwhale24: I am in total agreement with your thoughts. The prized standard of beauty is the beauty we see and have seen plastered all over TV, magazines, movies, pageants, for decades. This standard is so deeply ingrained in people that they aren't aware that they subconsciously compare themselves to and desire to attain that standard.
Too all Asians out ... ( 3 weeks ago by Jeffieboi)
Too all Asians out there, even though it's your choice...please don't have this surgery. Asian's are SO hot. Why would you want to change that. As a white person, I find Asian eyes to be very...umm....distinct, but in a good way. I just love the straight dark hair, the slight difference in the eyes...I find that sexy. No reason to look less Asian if you ask me.
