The lights on the ground looked different from the first view (which appeared recorded) than the "ground" on the areal with the missing statue...the missing light pattern matches the table display (mind), but not the part when Lady Liberty is visible. The areal shot was filming boats in the water, this accounts for the TV audience seeing the illusion. This means that lighting, the curtain and/or the pedestal theory could account for how the both the live and TV audience perceived the illusion.
