Update 12/25/07- After the movie was over, he showed up & sang two songs. Two songs were not enough for us, Jack!. He talked a lot though. I wish I could filmed while thing but my SD card went out just right before he finished the song. My seat was front row dead center! At the Silver Lake Film Festival in Los Angeles.

I've been Ramblin Jack fan since older brother turned me on to him in 1969. He brought home "Young Brigham" and that was all she wrote. I still love to sit with the lights off and listen to 912 greens.

His real name is Elliot Charles Adnopoz of Eastern European Ashkenazi extraction. He followed Woody Guthrie around for years, copied everything about him, then set out to make a career. Forerunner of the sexual revolution ( i.e. the assault on monogamy), the original "Jewish Cowboy".

I first heard "South Coast" in 1960 at Deegen's Big Sur Inn, sung by a lady who had worked at Deegens' the previous year and organized a bunch of us to rent the creek house for a week. The lady who wrote it, along with others, (Lillian Ross) had just died the year before. (more)

It is about Big Sur (Big South) and Ross was the descendant of an old Big Sur family. Jolon (spelled Cholon in some versions), where he won his wife in a card game, is east of Big Sur in the Hunter Liggett military reservation. There is nothing there now but i assume there was once at least a saloon. (more)

On the same trip, my family had a friend who was renting a cabin from Henry Miller on Partington Ridge. It was next door to Miller's cabin and they took us on a tour. My big recollection of Millers place (he was away and never moved back) was seeing a book called "Sex Over 60". It had all blank pages. Sorry the post is backwards...

The documentary made tells the story of this living legend. At 20 yrs old Jack toured with the great Woody Guthrie, woody 40, they cruised around the country in car, Played here and there...
After a show in Kelowna, July 25 04 he came out to a pub and told us some stories of the old days....God bless jack, hope all is well, Robert smith said to say hello. Like the Corb Lund tune you played on!

Jack stayed at my house this weekend. He's a super nice guy. My dad, Gene LaFond, knows him through Bob Dylan and drove him from the Twin Cities to Hibbing for Dylan Days. After that was done with his gig there he came to stay at my house for two nights. He played this song and Don't Think Twice on my couch. It was unreal.

It's a fine version of a classic I've seen RJE perform several times, from San Diego State Backdoor to Mill Valley's Sweetwater and Petaluma's Mystic Theater. But what happened to the end of the song here? (I have driven through Jolon, or what is left of it, leaving Hwy 101 nr King City heading toward Big Sur through Hunter Liggett military reservation. It's an interesting drive to say the least.
