Better in black and white, but you have to marvel at the time put into this colorization. I'm still baffled.

I know. Colorization is the artistic equalivant of rape. Nice jacket, Bogie.

I love the B&W version but it's interesting to see this in colour. Not great but not as bad as it could be. Does anyone know where I can see the original version?

Ahha. This ovie really didn't need to be colorized. A "film noir" is just MEANT to be in black and white.

You can thank Ted Turner for bastardizing the director's work. He did it with computers in the 1980's.

The studios had nothing to do with colorizing films. They no longer controlled these films. Ted Turner bought the rights and his lust for money resulted in them being colorized.

I have this on DVD, with the 1945 prerelease version as well. I've watched this at least half a dozen times and it still enchants and baffles me. Arguably one of the most confusing plot lines ever depicted in film.

Note that from 1:53 to about 2:00 the dialogue is out of sync with the lips, they dubbed the dialogue in after to correct changes they made to other scenes. Her lips say "I was out all evening." when the dialogue says "She was in all evening." Also notice her right leg is lower than her left in the door background shot, then it is even in the window background shot.

Where did you ever read or heard that it was dubbed? I would love to know that. Thanks.

I bought the Humphrey Bogart Collection from Warner Brothers issued in 2000. It contains, The Big Sleep, Key Largo, Casablanca, Maltese Falcon. The Big Sleep disc is a double sided one, one side has the 1945 version, the other has the 1946 version. In the special features they detail most of the changes between the two version. I lack the knowledge to transfer the media to you tube other than an air transfer. I posted my poor attempt as a video response.

Thank you for your answer!!! Very interesting, because I didn't know that and I'm a huge Bogart and Bacall fan :)

I'm a big "Fan" of Bacall, and Bogart was great. I have a copy of Bacall's autobiography "By Myself" from 1978. The real story is a million times more potent than any screen romance they did. My favourite Betty and Boggie is "To Have and Have Not." The behind the scenes story is dynamite.

He thought that if colorized more people would see it when most fans get mad. No, it kills the mood and few have said Casablanca should be in color. I know some of you people threw up when they read "Casablanca in color" Once they showed a colorized "It's a Wonderful Life" on NBC. I have never seen it that way again.

I never knew color could be so creepy. I feel like I'm watching a video game. And you'd think, given the choice, they'd find a better color than that suit!
