Showing the first two stages of the rare and obscure Castlevania arcade game, Haunted Castle. I am playing the Japanese version, Akumajou Dracula, which is slightly easier and more enjoyable than the near impossible US version.

Well, at least the music is good. The fact that a lot of the songs were remixed for later Castlevania games is proof of that.

One thing I remember about this game is that transition from dusk to night in Stage 1. I remember how I'd see that when I played Haunted Castle at a couple of the local 7-11's and think "Uh oh...that's not good, is it?". Ooh, atmosphere. :-)
(I also remember the harpy doorway and the blood-weeping painting in Level 3. Very nice touches.)

As for the Simon/Richter debate, remember that Haunted Castle was originally supposed to be the sequel to Castlevania. Then Konami got a different idea and released Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. So while the hero in Haunted Castle is indeed Simon Belmont, it's the version that most people don't remember because its position got usurped by another sequel with a number in the name. :-/

And I always figured that Simon walked the way he did because he was holding his whip in both his hands, keeping it nice and tense for a good lashing. And you know how boxers and experienced fighters tend to hunch over when going into a fight? It keeps the chin down and reduces the fighter's profile, making him (or at least his torso) a little harder to hit.
See? Simon walks like that because he's BATTLE-READY, man. >;-)

I dont want to be one of these geeks that says "oh I beat this game", but I did. it was rather easy too. I played Version K of course and beat it on the hardest setting, damage level being easy of course. There is no way to beat this game on the normal damage. THis gmae is awesome btw.
