Undoubtedly one of the finest series ever produced by BBC. This made a huge impression on me as a teenager. Rich, complex and very moving. Potter always credited the audience with some intelligence, which alas, seems to be almost a lost virtue.

Potter's Singing Detective is a classic - a masterpiece. A must for all to see and think about.
The boy Marlowe ... ( 7 months ago by GrenvilleT)
The boy Marlowe remembers his dear old dad entertaining. But Dear Old Dad let him down, didn't he, in the Forest of Dean? Eden was ruined. Those lovely birds: all dead now for Marlowe.
What a great clip from the most perfect British TV Drama ever made. Wonderful casting - that little boy whose pride in his dad is beautiful and agonising, Mike, the superb Jim Carter, those chiselled working faces.
And that exquisite '30s naive recording.
So many layers of meaning.
Thanks so much for this.
Shit, if they came ... ( 6 months ago by Vailinen)
Shit, if they came up with something even remotely as good as "The Singing Detective" today, I would buy myself a TV-set! As for now, I really can
´t be bothered. Definitely not worth the money.
You'll wait a while ... ( 6 months ago by coboltoe)
You'll wait a while! TV execs these days bet on reality tv/talent shows, stale dramas with shallow plots, throw in a few housewife favourites and who cares? Still pat their own backs in the baftas. This is the greatest programme I've ever seen - still havent seen pennies from heaven yet though. Mcgovern & Laplante have written great stuff, but this is the best for me. Funny to watch the "points of view" dvd extra review of the program - real narrow minded people at the time.
