Black Reconstruction is a book by W.E.B. DuBois written in 1935, that suggests that Jim Crow Segregation laws instituted in the South after the American Civil War, were key to keeping white and black farmers apart, so they couldn't unite and over throw the ruling class at the time. Here's my shot at understanding what Thought is saying and Rik Cordero is trying to show. Thought is angry at a system that he has triumphed over, but he still feels is wrong and holds back so many.

In this way Thought is very similar to DuBois, Havard educated but identified with poor black and white farmers. His hate is at a system that divides to rule. He uses the term Nigga to put everyone on the same level, he calls MCs that feed the divide nigga's, refers to establishment as niggas and himself a nigga. This is partially about the record industry, but more importantly the whole cultural system that uses hate and fear to keep people from advancing.

By the way, to all the people who mention Thought is underrated, True, but dude is not complaining. A lot of this song celebrates success of him and the roots, allowing him to see the world, gain perspective, and give him a platform for this commentary. This track and the video is genius. It ain't about hate its about victory and change. At least that's my view as a Black Canadian.
