not really.communication is something society seems to lack. if you have an idea or opinion, type, write or voice it. comments and ideas like your stupid little saying suggest that holding back makes you a bigger person. expression is important. but that said, a heated debate should be looked at as no more than fun. a prize for a retard should be awarded to the person that takes effortless intercontinental communication for granted. the gold goes to you... zinggg lol

"heavy metal" scale ... ( 1 week ago by NurseDischord)
"heavy metal" scale.."rock" scale..
Hey everybody, it's been used in classical music too! If you start it on the 2nd fret, it's no longer the "heavy metal" scale in D, instead it's called the C# super locrian "altered" scale and is more prominently asscociated with jazz. Appropriate chords?!? Whatever happened to melody? Sorry t
o be an old fuddy duddy, but scales are for practice. I get fed up of hearing talented musicians do nothing but blitz up and down scales. Write something!

any tuning really. as long as the guitar is still tuned in 4ths(excluding the B string) it'll sound right. standard, down 1/2 step, down 1 whole step, 2 whole steps, anything like that
pick up the guitar grimoire and you'll get all the scales you need

I'm quite new to scales and feel a bit perplexed about them, I've only ever learnt songs and made my own melodies/songs, maybe I'm unenlightened but I never knew songs or styles could be categorized into scales. I want to know if I should continue in my current direction, or if I should practice and master all the locrian and lydian and minor/major this and that? Perhaps you can clarify my confusion a little, NurseD, or someone else :)

Scales are ... ( 3 days ago by NurseDischord)
Scales are wonderful things when it comes to sight-reading and practice, and they are also invaluable for developing a good "ear". Typically, any melody you'll hear on the radio is composed of notes from one or two scales (three or four in trad jazz, and any number in classical or post-bop). Learning all your scales is good for you.
Thta said, you need ... ( 3 days ago by NurseDischord)
Thta said, you need to know when to let them go and just play. Scales are a great "limiting" tool for working out melodies, as they cut down the available notes from twelve to seven, or even five if you play pentatonics.
The modes of a scale are a really easy concept once you crack them, but a little hard to explain briefly. Take a scale, say Cmajor. If you start on the second note (d) and finish an octave higher (d again), the scale has a totally different character.
This is known as ... ( 3 days ago by NurseDischord)
This is known as the "d dorian" mode. Hokay?
My advice to you--try and work out how to play each of the modes of Cmajor. The principle is simple, but it will take time--pick a note of the C major scale, and play the next seven notes of the C scale from there. Use your head, and use your ear, and make a note of the fingering you used, and goo
d luck! Once you've cacked that, check out tabs for the Harmonic Minor, and start again. Ditto with the Melodic Minor. This will take time!
Once you've got ... ( 3 days ago by NurseDischord)
Once you've got these memorised, you'll want to discover new scales and modes. You'll discover the Altered scale, the Enigmatic scale, the Prometheus scale, the Whole-Tone scale, the Diminished scale, Eastern microtonal scales and the Bartok scales of limited transposition, and you'll realise you haven't got anywhere.
So after all that, ... ( 3 days ago by NurseDischord)
So after all that, my advice would be to learn to play the vocal parts from songs. Don't use tab, stick a CD on and play the vocal part. Do this every day as practice. Star with simple folky melodies like twinkle twinkle little star, and work up to Mariah Carey mental obbligato warbling. This will take years to achieve! Stick with it. After all, scales are used to create melodies, and melodies are what the singing voice is for.
That's enough from me. Best of luck, Nicol, and have fun!
