Slim Pickens got his name when, as a new actor, complained in the middle of a desert, shooting a western, about the food. When he walked up to the catering line he saw that much of the food was gone and that the choice goodies were all gone he said "um pretty slim pickens". I believe John Wayne gave him that nick name that day. I remember the story long ago on Johhny Carson..

I just happened to have recently watched the criterion "Straw Dogs," which contains an entire "features" CD. In a feature about Peckinpah they print a letter written to a critic, where he happens to imply that he LOATHES "The Last Picture Show."

I was born in Lincoln county, NM, and though this movie is not the most accurate depiction of Billy the Kid and the cattle wars (I'd say Young Guns I imo) this scene is one of the most beautiful and moving pieces of cinematography I've ever seen. From the sunset over the Capitan mtns. to the clear shallow Rio Hondo and the deep emotion conveyed without words, this is simply spectacular.
