also, the basis of things "indie" is to be beyond common labels. But by calling it indie you're giving it a label. So it's pretty meaningless.

Indie is a shortened version of "independant" - anything that can be classed as independant is "indie". Nowadays the term indie has become something thats deemed "cool" and basically the people who think its cool to be "indie" are the complete opposite of the original term. I've used it in my name due to this simple fact, as a pun. It's a horrid term to use.
As for a genre on The Smiths, they are what you want them to be, they were virtually everything :-)
