I think he (Ben) died from the gunshot when they had the shootout follwoing the killing of Cooper's zombie\daughter.
Not a bad movie, but feels more like a made for TV movie as it has that "sanitized" feeling to it, with that Tales From The Darkside-ish music in the opening scene.
Nice new zombie look though, and this time around, when Johnny dies, it actually look like it HURTS...
