Jealousy and frustration. He gave up a woman who was devoted to him, his family, his military career for her. He even lived as an outlaw. His breaking point was when she threw the ring. It was like she threw everything he had given up for her back in his face. He just snapped.

Interestingly the fact that the heroine (anti-heroine?) is killed at the end was completely out of character for an opera for the Opera Comique in Paris! The marginal Micaela fits far more neatly into the heroine-type for grande opera (being a virtuous sop and all that) but we hardly see her :) And Don Jose, although tenor is seriously flawed compared to the eversoheroic (but boring?) escamillo. Part of the reason Carmen is so wonderful is that it subverts the genre so :) nietzsche's favourite!

I did not see this movie but last night I listened to Abbado's Carmen with Berganza, Domingo, Milnes and Cotrubas. It was my first complete Carmen and I have to say I don't like this opera, at least this performance. The only character I like is Michaela and Cotrubas singing it. Domingo's sound is generally too stringent for me and sometimes he sounds like swallowing the words. I like Milnes more as Rigoletto then Escamillo, and Berganza is OK, elegant and stylish but I felt almost nothing.
