OMG how many times do I have to see labrie is better russell is beter blah blah... Those guys sing with totaly different styles and aims. Russell Allen has a power, a melodic and verstile voice, that...well he can sing with air raid sirens and you'll still want to hear more!
Labrie has more soft and gentle voice that goes good with the melodies DT is producing... It's all matter of personal styles and at the end to be honest, RA can outing live JL anytime!

James LaBrie has far more variation in style than Russell Allen. He sings soft and melodically, as well as gruff and heavy. Frankly, they are both wondrous singers, and I'm not saying that Russell Allen isn't one of metal's best voices, but LaBrie has him beat in diversity, as well as range.
Silent Man by Dream Theater is a prime example of the lighter side of LaBrie's vocals. However, if you listen to, for instance, Honor Thy Father, you clearly see the differences.

Heard 'Through the looking glass'? 'Paradise Lost'? 'Communion and the Oracle'?
There's plenty of Symph X songs that feature Russell without the "gruff and heavy" tone that he uses in many of their other songs.

Russell allen takes labrie in all categories. Control, range, power, dynamics, versatillity, all goes to allen. Labrie lost his powerful voice after the awake album, and even before that, allen was still the best singer. Allen often sings in a soft gently voice. Listen to through the looking glas with SymX, and you'll see most aspects of allens godly voice! Especially the verse at around 8:35 with the awesome E5 at the end!

oh my.. I must say one thing, that Russell now is better than James. If you're talking about the variation in singing, try listening to the Odyssey and Inferno.

labrie used to be talented enough to be in the same range with allen, but after his throat damage, his voice was changed, rendering him unable to reach such high ranges, that's why there was a change in his style....still being a talented artist...but right now allen is better
