the fish was cut off, and the boat went back to the dock. The angler had to be flown to the hospital but I read elsewhere (forgot where) that it was about 2-3 hours after the injury before he got treatment. I can't remember exactly where this happened but I think I read that it was either Mexico or further south in South America.

It was at Tropic Star lodge (Panama) 4-5 years ago. If lew in the same day he was flown out. The reason it took a few hours to be treated is that they had to fly in a plane to get him and then return to Panama...about an hour each way. And, the captain did nothin wrong, the fish just turned and jumped right at the boat when they were up close. I flew in the day the day after he was flown out. If I recall, he took a very hard hit to the face.

Yeah, that is what I heard from a different site that this was on. The camera man wrote some info there about the injury and time it took to get him to the hospital, but not much about the fight. I know backing-down is a common practice and is acceptable to a point. I have done it also. Call me safe...but no marlin is worth an injury to an angler, or a lot of boat damage to us non-millionaires. "Green" Marlin are dangerous. I'll keep them on a bit longer, but that is just me. Tight lines:)

It was just a freak accident. The fish was down and came up. We had a big cuda jump into the boat once in Costa Rica and it cut one of our guys pretty good, but that had nothing to do with backing down. It is just part of the deal that you hope does not happen. If you fight the fish too long, you are just going to kill it.
