I'll try to explain briefly.
Flemish is only one of our local Dutch dialects, besides Vlaams there's Limburgs, Brabants, Antwerps. The same continues in the Netherlands with Hollands, Limburgs, Brabants, Gronings, etc.
None of these are official languages, the standard language of FL BE & NE is Dutch (Nederlands). It our language too, historically we are the Southern-Dutch (Hollanders being the Northern-Dutch).

I didn't say Dutch is a dialect in Belgium, I just said Flemish is a kind of dialect of Dutch spoken there. Anyway, I didn't know thaf if someone learns to communicate their ideas in an unnofficial language , that couldn't be called their native language.

Hence my long-winded reply saying that Flemish is not a language, and from experience I know that foreigners think that every northern Belgian speaks Flemish and that they say Flemish to our Dutch, showing that they don't really comprehend what Flemish (Vlaams) means ;)
It's a convoluted subject, not really fit for discussion in a few YT comments :)
